Science in the Lower School is hands-on, inquiry-driven, and deeply connected to the natural world.

With a focus on the unique ecosystems of the Lowcountry, students engage in project-based learning that encourages curiosity, observation, and critical thinking. Through meaningful partnerships with local organizations such as the South Carolina Aquarium and the Department of Natural Resources, girls extend their learning beyond the classroom—exploring real-world environmental challenges and developing a sense of responsibility as stewards of their environment.

In the Ashley Hall Lower School, Everyday Math is more than a curriculum–it’s how students learn to think.

This dynamic program encourages students to see math as a meaningful, real-world tool rather than just a set of rules to memorize. Through hands-on problem solving and thoughtful exploration, students develop strong conceptual understanding and higher-order thinking skills.

As they progress from kindergarten through Grade 4, they build confidence and fluency while mastering increasingly complex mathematical ideas and applying them in a variety of contexts.

The Lower School literacy program, Arts & Letters^TM,  nurtures a deep love of reading and writing while building the skills students need to express themselves with confidence.

The introduction of Arts & Letters^TM coincides with the School’s recent authorization as an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School for the Primary Years Programme (PYP). Both emphasize inquiry-based, student-centered learning. Like the PYP, Arts & Letters^TM is driven by essential questions. It encourages students to explore perspectives, engage in discussion, and take ownership of their learning—focusing not just on what students know, but how they think and connect ideas.

Arts & Letters^TM is grounded in brain research and integrates reading and writing to strengthen comprehension and communication. Instead of disconnected lessons, students engage in content-driven modules built around essential questions. They explore topics through literature, informational texts, visual art, and multimedia, building skills and understanding. Each module follows a clear progression—students question, analyze, and synthesize—developing understanding over time.

The research-based Fundations literacy program is used in the Lower School to build strong, confident readers. 

Through engaging, hands-on lessons that incorporate movement, sound, and visual learning, students develop essential skills in reading, spelling, and handwriting in a way that feels both purposeful and enjoyable.

Grounded in the science of reading, Fundations provides a clear, systematic approach that ensures every child masters foundational skills like phonemic awareness and phonics. This intentional instruction not only supports early success but also gives students the confidence and independence to thrive as readers and writers for years to come.

Lower School students are introduced to history and civic life that are active, meaningful, and connected to the world around them.

Through integrated classroom learning, girls explore communities, cultures, and the foundations of civic responsibility while developing curiosity about the past and present. Learning extends beyond the classroom through field trips and hands-on experiences that bring history to life—from visiting local landmarks to engaging with community leaders. These opportunities help students make real-world connections, deepen their understanding, and begin to see themselves as informed, engaged citizens. 

In addition to their core studies, Lower School students at Ashley Hall engage in a wide variety of enrichment classes designed to spark curiosity and creativity.

Guided by a team of dedicated specialist teachers, girls explore subjects that nurture both mind and body—from scientific discovery and world languages to the arts, movement, and wellness. These experiences provide opportunities for students to discover new interests, develop talents, and build skills that support their overall growth, ensuring a well-rounded and joyful learning experience each day.
