Our Vision
Ashley Hall envisions a future in which every student is known, challenged, and inspired to reach her full potential. Through a thoughtful, developmentally appropriate education, we prepare girls and young women to lead lives of purpose, embrace intellectual curiosity, and make a meaningful impact in their communities and beyond. This vision reflects Ashley Hall’s emphasis on supporting young women at every stage of their education and honoring how each student learns best.

Our History
Founded in Charleston in 1909 by educator and visionary Mary Vardrine McBee, Ashley Hall was established to provide an exceptional education for girls at a time when such opportunities were rare. Throughout much of its history, Ashley Hall also offered both domestic and international boarding, welcoming students from across the country and around the world and enriching its vibrant, diverse community until the program concluded in 2022.
For more than a century, Ashley Hall has educated generations of young women who have gone on to make meaningful contributions in their fields and communities, including notable alumnae such as author Madeleine L’Engle ’37 and former First Lady Barbara Bush ’43. While the school has evolved to meet the needs of a changing world, its commitment to developing confident, capable young women has remained constant.
In 2023, Ashley Hall began its journey toward becoming an International Baccalaureate World School, further strengthening its college-preparatory program and positioning students to become thoughtful global citizens. Throughout its history, Ashley Hall’s mission has remained its touchstone—guiding its work and shaping the experience of every student.
