GIVING BACK

At Ashley Hall, community action is woven into the fabric of who we are. We view service of our community as part of their larger education and a vital part of shaping our graduates. More than volunteering, it’s about creating meaningful connections and contributing to the greater good of Charleston and the Lowcountry. Guided by our mission to foster ethical responsibility and compassionate leadership, students engage with a variety of local partners—from the Ronald McDonald House and the South Carolina Aquarium’s Turtle Care Center to Dragon Boat Charleston, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Through these partnerships, students experience firsthand the power of service, building empathy, leadership, and a lifelong commitment to making a difference in their community and beyond.

Building Awareness of How Students Can Be Helpful in the World - Time, Talent, Treasure. 

Providing the runway for students to take action.

eARLY sCHOOL
Parents are a big part of supporting the community action piece in the Early School.
  • Students start to learn about the Blessing Box in primary and Pre-K, and have more exposure to different communities. They learn what it means to be a productive community member, through participation in their class groups and around campus. Early School parents involved, walking hand-in-hand with their children as they first get their experiences in community action. 
lOWER sCHOOL
Exposing students to possibilities, giving more context to community action, and what that means for them.
  • The Lower School fosters a special relationship with the Ronald McDonald House of Charleston. Through the collection of pop-tabs and visits to deliver supplies, Lower School students are proud to support our neighbors. 
  • Kindergarten students participate in a bake sale to support the South Carolina Aquarium Turtle Hospital. The initiative is paired with speakers from the Aquarium who visit Ashley Hall to help them understand the broader context of how their support affects the Aquarium. 
  • In the Fourth Grade, Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) leadership positions open up and students are able to help plan, execute, and reflect on community action events on campus and how they contribute to our overall goals as a School. 
mIDDLE sCHOOL
At this stage, students are focused on discovering their spark; understanding what action they want to participate in.
  • In Middle School, students begin to take the driver's seat and have more ownership over their community action.
  • Middle School Student Council is involved in Sustainable Development Goal leadership across campus. 
uPPER sCHOOL
In the Upper School, students pursue community action annually, reording hours spent in service projects that matter to them and support our neighbors.

BLESSING BOX

The Ashley Hall Blessing Box began in 2020 as a student-led project guided by beloved teacher Kiki Sweigart and has grown into a lasting expression of compassion and community connection. Located at Fuel Cantina on Rutledge Avenue, the Blessing Box operates on a simple principle—take what you need, leave what you can—and provides nonperishable food and essentials to neighbors throughout the year. Today, Middle and Upper School students steward the project through the Doing Good Society, with support from faculty, families, and community partners, honoring Mrs. Sweigart’s legacy and demonstrating how small acts of kindness can create meaningful impact.
