Carol
Hannah Whitfield spent the day with Upper School Visual Art students on
Dec. 9th. She is a New York fashion designer who specializes in bridal
wear. Look out for her work in the next issue of Martha Stewart's
Weddings magazine. Her answer to the question, "Do you have a favorite wedding dress you have designed?"
can be seen in the featured Lowcountry wedding of an Ashley Hall
alumna. Carol Hannah brought three wedding dresses that had been on the
catwalk and made for models who are around 6 feet tall. We were able to
feel the silk fabric and examine how the dress was constructed.
Carol Hannah was one of the top three finalists in Project Runway 6, and students had many questions about that experience. Once accepted to take part, contestants relinquish their personal lives, and, worse, as far as students were concerned, their phones. She said it was a wonderful, exhausting experience that gave her many connections in the international world of fashion. She talked about the importance of being hard working, reliable, consistent, punctual, and pleasant. She knew she wanted to be a successful designer/entrepreneur so she chose to major in Business and minor in Studio Art. She now has five people working for her, they send some of her handmade bride's dresses overseas as well as to stores in the USA. In Charleston, they can be seen at Madison Row.
