Spirit of South Carolina

Learning sets sail as Ashley Hall Upper School students embark on an adventure of a lifetime. Through a unique partnership with the South Carolina Maritime Foundation, our students spend 10 days aboard the historically accurate 140-foot schooner, becoming active members of the crew immersed in all aspects of shipboard life. Under the guidance of a professional crew, our girls stand watch, navigate and ultimately assume command of the Spirit of South Carolina, all while embarking on a journey of self-discovery and learning powerful lessons in teamwork. "The Spirit of SC was incredible! Definitely a highlight of my Ashley Hall years, and something I wouldn't have had the opportunity to do anywhere else," says Rebecca Rosen, '11.

Eighth Grade Overnight Sail

Over the past three years all eighth grade students have participated in a two day voyage in local waters aboard the Spirit of South Carolina in the month of November. The purpose of these voyages has been to expose the students to the ship and to the history, culture, and science associated with Charleston and the Atlantic Ocean during the great Age of Sail. Another goal of these voyages has been to give young students hands-on experience in the operation and necessary duties associated with tall-ships. As there are few modern conveniences on board the Spirit, students must develop leadership skills by working together to perform a plethora of tasks, such as hauling the heavy sails up the mast, standing watch in the middle of the night in sometimes cold and rainy conditions, and cleaning the decks and soles of the vessel on hands and knees. Despite the difficulty of these tasks, many students have described these voyages as the highlight of their eighth grade year. Moreover, these voyages have established excellent foundations for those who wish to further their experience and knowledge aboard the Spirit in the selective ten-day program for students in Grades 9-12.
