A unique assignment for Mrs. Brinson's sixth grade math students helped get them into the holiday spirit while practicing their math skills. The project? Design and build their very own Gingerbread Houses. To assist the girls in the project, Ashley Hall alumna and local architect, Elizabeth Stelling Allen '92, talked to the girls about the realities of designing a home as well as running her own business. She shared with them several schematic essentials and baseline do's and don'ts in home design.
As the students move forward with the project they will utilize their measurement, ratios and proportions, shapes, angles, volume and surface area skills to calculate the perimeter, square footage, and outside surface area of the house. They must also build the house to scale and stay within a predetermined budget. You are invited come see their completed houses next Thursday afternoon or on Friday.
