Recycled Marine Organisms Come to Life

Students in Mrs. Cook's fifth grade Life Science classes wrapped up a semester long study of oceanography and marine biology with a project that challenged their creativity and knowledge of the delicate ecosystems that comprise the oceans. Each student presented a paper on a specific organism describing the phylum, characteristics, habitat, oceanic zones, adaptations, place in the food web, and any threats that this organism faces. They then created a model of their organism using recyclable materials as a testament to the importance of keeping the habitats for these organisms clean. The Cassiopea or "upside down" jellyfish was a popular choice with the students as were horseshoe crabs, turtles, flounder, reef squid, a seahorse and many, many more.
