PAWS: Personal Awareness and Wellness Seminar

The PAWS program, developed by Dean of Students Kelly Wood and Director of College Admissions Amanda Murrell, prepares Ashley Hall students for success in school, college and life. By combining the benefits of Academic Advisory, College Counseling, and Wellness, students are provided an opportunity to excel in the areas of academic management, career exploration, college selection, and life skills. Overlap among these three areas is purposeful and beneficial.

Academic Advisory
Academic Advisors are responsible for a small group of students, providing education and support in the following ways:

  • General School News
  • Study Skills
  • Time Management
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of academic strategies
  • Course Mapping and Selection
  • First point of contact for families - refer as appropriate
  • Schedule and facilitate parent conferences
  • Provide training on student-led conference skills
  • Attend grade level meetings as a student advocate
  • Oversee and encourage participation in co-curricular activities
  • Oversee Community Action Experiences in the 9th - 12th grades
College Counseling
The primary goal is to bring a measure of self awareness and understanding to our students earlier in their Upper School years in the following ways:

  • High school course selection
  • Academic interests and proclivities
  • Summer choices / academic programs
  • Resume building
  • Selecting colleges
  • What to anticipate: grades 9-12
  • Interviewing skills
  • How to make college decisions
  • Financial Aid
  • Writing Application Essays
  • Nuts and bolts of the college application
  • Visiting colleges
  • Career and college choices
Wellness / Life Skills
To complement our existing program, students in 10th thru 12th grade will explore the following areas:
